Are you able to relax? I can be really bad at it these days. Virgo types, Moon Saturn types (I have the trine) can have a hard time relaxing, not striving. I also have a lot of squares in my chart (striving again!) and I want to learn (uh-oh, Saturn again!) this skill. See? Even the way I characterize this not-a-problem is all about working, learning.
And in the back of my mind I’m also thinking that this relaxation and letting go that I crave is about… being peaceful enough so that NEW IDEAS AND GOALS AND DREAMS CAN FLOW IN. Rather than an end unto itself.
I’m in a cabin in the woods. No no a little beach hut. No, a cottage on a mountainside. Some kind of Walden, a stream, a fridge with snacks. Not here, not Brooklyn city life, BUT WAIT–
Last night there was some kind of magical scene I want to share with you:
I had gone for a walk and turned the corner near the subway station and bus stop, usually a busy noisy corner. It had just gotten dark, earlier these days because of daylight savings, and it was unusually quiet (but still busy) and there’s this guy with his table and he sells… I don’t even know. Incense? DVDs? But he’s got an old-school radio boom-box and he is BLASTING (blasting but it’s crisp and clear on this cool night) Kenny Roger’s The Gambler and I stopped to listen to the wisdom of this song 🙂 Like all of middle Brooklyn stopped to listen to this song. All of us paying attention.
After the first chorus, I turned the corner and made my way home amidst folks just getting off work, commencing the evening, with or without a slice.
“On a warm summer’s evenin’ on a train bound for nowhere,
I met up with the gambler; we were both too tired to sleep.
So we took turns a starin’ out the window at the darkness
‘Til boredom overtook us, and he began to speak.
He said, “Son, I’ve made my life out of readin’ people’s faces,
And knowin’ what their cards were by the way they held their eyes.
So if you don’t mind my sayin’, I can see you’re out of aces.
For a taste of your whiskey I’ll give you some advice.”
So I handed him my bottle and he drank down my last swallow.
Then he bummed a cigarette and asked me for a light.
And the night got deathly quiet, and his face lost all expression.
Said, “If you’re gonna play the game, boy, ya gotta learn to play it right.
You got to know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em,
Know when to walk away and know when to run.
You never count your money when you’re sittin’ at the table.
There’ll be time enough for countin’ when the dealin’s done.”
